Community Support and Advocacy

OCV’s basic ongoing work is support and advocacy for rural communities.   We stay on top of local issues and work to keep people regularly informed through our newsletter and social media.   In addition, when asked, we help community groups with issues impacting their services or quality of life.  We help communities understand decision-making authority, who to influence and how to use the media.

Our successes include:

  • Stopping UNC’s airport and advancing plans to relocate it to a private terminal at RDU, protection 1000 acres of farmland and saving taxpayers nearly $100 million.

  • Stopping the county’s waste transfer station, saving taxpayers millions and encouraging better planning from the county and the towns

  • Keeping Bradshaw Quarry Convenience Center open and restoring Sunday hours at all centers

  • Protecting critical reservoir lands from logging

  • Restricting floating industrial zoning to economic development districts (and out of rural communities)

  • Initiating the Emergency Services workgroup which resulted in improved rural response times, reduced radio outages, and placed ambulances in rural fire stations.

We are often asked to familiarize town leaders and others with the rural landscape and community outposts.
