Rural Heritage Program

“ Orange County’s rich rural heritage offers a “unique pride in place” project that reveals how the rural community actually works”

The Rural Heritage Program is  a project in partnership with Schley Grange. This work is designed to build awareness about heritage farms and families, and the evolution of communities around pillars of education, faith, and commerce.  This “pride in place” program will help educate visitors, residents and neighbors about Orange County’s rich cultural heritage and how the rural community works.  Orange County’s Cultural Resource Center is assisting with research.

Long term plans include a self guided driving tour, and periodic lectures about the evolution of rural culture.  In the meantime, we are working with heritage families and Orange County to secure century farm recognition and conservation easements if/as desired.  We will encourage local media to feature farms and stories regularly in the press.

Given our proximity to Triangle urban centers and major university centers at UNC and Duke, this unique program offers broad exposure that will benefit rural communities throughout the state and elsewhere.  Program tools and templates developed can be offered to other rural communities to develop similar rural awareness programs.
