"Thank You Chancellor Thorp" Sundae
Earlier this month, Chancellor Thorp announced that UNC will terminate their plans to site an airport in Orange County. To commemorate his quick and decisive action to keep an airport out of Orange County, Maple View Ice Cream featured a "Thank You Chancellor Thorp sundae" the weekend of January 30, through Sunday, February 1 at the Maple View Country Store on Dairyland Road and in their Ice Cream store in Hampton Pointe.
The sundae, designed by Chancellor Thorp's children, featured Carolina Blue ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream -- with optional wet walnuts. The ice cream was custom made for the occasion using Maple View's famous vanilla ice cream mixed with precisely tinted Carolina Blue food coloring provided by UNC. "This is not the first and probably not the last time that special interests will attempt to site an airport in Orange County. We were delighted at how quickly the new Chancellor acted and hope that this is a sign of good things to come from UNC", said Chris and Bob Nutter of Maple View Farm. "We look forward to meeting him and exploring opportunities to work with UNC to promote awareness of our rural community."
When designing the sundae with his children, Chancellor Thorp was assured that the blue and brown color combination would be fashionable and undeniably delicious. Thorp watchers are expected at Maple View stores throughout the weekend.

Airport Plans Shelved
On January 9th, Holden Thorp announced that UNC will not form an airport authority. He said the university discontinued its plans to site an airport in Orange County. He committed to moving AHEC's operations to RDU. This decision is based on the Chancellor's own research and priorities for UNC.
Orange County Voice will continue to work with the community and the County to update our zoning and put other important safeguards into place for the long term - but certainly this is a great success for us all.
Congratulations and thank you to all of the citizens, community groups and local businesses that united quickly and decisively to oppose the airport.
Thank you to Chancellor Thorp for demonstrating his decisive leadership and commitment to the community.
